Stories

What is the relationship between oranges and modernist architecture? In Soller they do, and very much so.

The export of oranges to France generated considerable wealth in Sóller, transforming the lives of its inhabitants and the landscape of the valley. Many Sollerics emigrated to France to work in the orange trade, and when they returned to their homeland, they brought with them new ideas and architectural styles.

The imprint of modernism in Sóller

The influence of French modernist architecture was evident in the construction of new houses and buildings in Sóller. These buildings are characterized by ornate facades, wrought iron balconies, stained glass windows and floral details. The combination of modernist elements with traditional Mallorcan architecture created a unique and distinctive style that can still be admired today in the historic center of Sóller.

The orange groves: a cultural landscape

The cultivation of oranges not only transformed the architecture of Sóller, but also its landscape. The orange groves became an essential part of the valley, creating a mosaic of colors and aromas that still delights visitors today. These orchards, carefully tended by generations of farmers, are a living testimony to the importance of the orange in the history and culture of Sóller.

The route of modernism and oranges:

Today, it is possible to walk the “Modernism Route” in Sóller, an itinerary that allows you to discover the most emblematic buildings of this golden age, such as the Bank of Sóller, the church of Sant Bartomeu or the Modernist Museum Can Prunera. In addition, visitors can enjoy the beauty of the orange groves and taste the products made from the “vera” orange, such as jams, liqueurs or the famous “gelat de Sóller” (Sóller ice cream).
