Costume jewelry manufacturing in Mallorca has a notable presence on the island. In recent decades it has experienced significant growth, driven by tourist demand and the creativity of local designers and artisans.

In Mallorca you can find several companies and workshops dedicated to the creation of costume jewelry, using a wide variety of materials, such as pearls cultivated on the island, semiprecious stones, metals, crystals, leather, wood and other natural elements. The designs are very varied, from classic and elegant pieces to more modern and avant-garde creations, reflecting the diversity and talent of Mallorcan creators.

Mallorcan jewelry is characterized by its quality, originality and attention to detail. Many artisans use traditional techniques passed down from generation to generation, such as pearl stringing, leather braiding or wood carving, to create unique and exclusive pieces. Others, on the other hand, are committed to innovation and experimentation, using new materials and techniques to shape their creations.

The production of costume jewelry in Mallorca is mainly concentrated in Palma, the island’s capital, where there are numerous stores and workshops offering a wide variety of products. However, there are also craftsmen and designers in other towns of the island, such as Manacor, Inca or Sóller, who contribute to enrich the offer of Mallorcan costume jewelry.

Costume jewelry has become an important sector for Mallorca’s economy, generating employment and attracting tourists and fashion lovers looking for unique and original pieces. The creativity and know-how of Mallorcan artisans have put the island’s fashion jewelry on the international map, and many of their creations are exported to other countries, where they are valued for their quality and design.

Stories

Mallorca’s worldwide fame in the manufacture of artificial pearls is mainly due to the Majorica company, founded in Manacor in 1890. Its unique manufacturing process, combining tradition and technology, has succeeded in creating artificial pearls of exceptional quality and beauty, rivaling natural pearls.

Majorica’s secret lies in its“pearl essence“, a secret formula composed of organic elements from the Mediterranean that is applied in successive layers on an opaline crystal core. This process, together with the hand polishing of each pearl, results in jewelry of incomparable luster and iridescence.

The fame of Majorica pearls spread quickly around the world, becoming a symbol of elegance and sophistication. Personalities such as Grace Kelly, Ava Gardner or Queen Sofia of Spain have worn these jewels, contributing to their international recognition.

Throughout its history, Majorica has been able to adapt to market changes and new trends, always maintaining its commitment to quality and innovation. Today, the company continues to be a world reference in the manufacture of artificial pearls, and its creations are appreciated for their beauty, durability and elegance.

Majorica’s fame has contributed to place Mallorca on the world map of jewelry, and has turned the island into a must destination for lovers of artificial pearls. The company has been able to keep alive the tradition of pearl manufacturing in Mallorca, adapting it to the new times and creating jewels that continue to be a symbol of elegance and distinction.

The beginnings of Majorca pearls

The creation of Majorica dates back to the end of the 19th century, when the German engineer Eduard Hugo Heusch, fascinated by the beauty of natural pearls, set out to create an artificial alternative that would be accessible to all. In 1890, he founded in Paris the company “Société des Perles de Indes E. Heusch & Co.”, which later moved to Manacor, Majorca, and adopted the name of Majorica.

The manufacturing process that makes Majorica pearls so special is based on a discovery made in the 17th century: the use of fish scales to coat glass beads and give them a luster similar to that of natural pearls. Heusch perfected this technique, developing a secret formula called “pearl essence”, composed of organic mother-of-pearl and other natural elements from the Mediterranean.
