History

The history of jewelry in Mallorca is rich and varied, reflecting the influence of various cultures over the centuries. From the Talayotic period (1200-123 BC), the first inhabitants of the island were already making personal adornments with materials such as bones, shells and stones.

With the arrival of the Phoenicians in the 8th century BC, Mallorcan jewelry began to incorporate precious metals. The Phoenicians brought with them advanced goldsmithing techniques, and the influence of this civilization can be seen in the use of gold and silver in jewelry making.

During Roman rule (123 BC – 476 AD), jewelry production in Mallorca flourished. The Romans introduced new techniques and styles, such as the use of gems and filigree. Jewelry of this era was a symbol of status and power, and its design reflected the opulence of the Roman Empire.

With the Islamic conquest in the 10th century, Mallorcan jewelry was enriched by Arab influence. Muslim artisans introduced the use of enamels and complex geometric designs, resulting in pieces of great beauty and detail.

After the arrival of the Christians with James I in 1229, local workshops began to produce jewelry inspired by Gothic art.

The Jewish community played a crucial role in this development, especially in Palma’s Calle Platería, known for its silversmith and jeweler workshops. The Jews brought unique techniques and styles, fusing Islamic and Christian influences in their creations.

In the 16th and 17th centuries, Mallorca benefited from maritime trade, and jewelry incorporated Renaissance and Baroque influences. Majorcan pearls, produced since the 19th century, became a distinctive symbol of the island. Although initially imported, the technique of manufacturing artificial pearls was perfected in Mallorca, consolidating the island’s reputation in the field of jewelry.

Today, jewelry in Mallorca is a combination of tradition and modernity. Local artisans continue to use ancestral techniques, but also experiment with new materials and contemporary designs. Mallorcan jewelry, from traditional pearls to innovative signature pieces, continues to be appreciated by locals and visitors alike, reflecting the island’s rich cultural heritage.
